Recent calculations have revealed that we get to an average of 85,000 litres of rainfall dropping on our roofes each year. Many people don’t realise that with a simple water appliance they can actually divert masses of this free water and use t for things like watering the garden, washing your car and of course the windows. The appliance that can simply do this is called a water butt and takes about an hour to fit. All the homeowner needs is a Power Drill with Hole Saw, a tape Measure and a hacksaw. The kit consists of a Water Butt with a Base, and rain diverter kit. (The rain diverter kit is supplied with the butt and works to divert the rainwater when the water butt is full. This means that the water will still be free to run down the drain and not over fill the water butt so it cannot overflow). South Kensington Plumbers use qualified tradesmen to fit appliances. To fit a water butt you will need to locate a suitable and easy place to connect to the downpipe for the water butt, then, place the base in position to support the butt. The water butt needs to be high enough to put a watering can under the tap. Place the water butt on its base and mark the height on the downpipe, now cut the pipe 3cm under this mark with the hacksaw. Connect the rain diverter onto the pipe. Now put the cut portion of the downpipe on the bottom of the diverter. With the drill make an 8cm hole for the water butt connector. Fix the water butt connector to the water butt by pressing it through the drilled hole and screwing it tight. A South Kensington Plumber is trained to fit a butt. Fit the water butt connector to the rainwater diverter using the fittings that came with the kit. Put the lid on the butt and lock it. Remember that the water that you can harvest from the water butt is fairly clean, but it sometimes can be contaminated by bird mess and other debris off the roof, so take care.
